OUR BACKGROUND
SUPPORT ONE TO EMPOWER MANY
UMMA Trust was established in 2003 as a Charitable Trust to provide social and community services for refugee and migrant communities with a specific focus on the wellbeing on Muslim women, children and families who are socially and economically disadvantaged. UMMA Trust takes a strength based approach to when supporting families and works in a holistic manner.
The UMMA Trust provides social services to refugee and Migrant families with a specific focus on the wellbeing of Muslim women, children and families who are socially and economically disadvantaged and in the process of resettlement in Auckland, New Zealand.
UMMA Trust is a women’s organisation, an accredited social services agency employing 5 women social workers from refugee background communities, who speak 8+ community languages and work with high needs families.
We also provide a diversity of health, education, budgeting and recreation programmes for women, children and youth that aim to ensure that families are able to lead productive and quality lives and be actively involved in New Zealand society.
We believe that women are the backbone of the family so we aim to increase their strengths, health and well-being and promote initiatives so that they can take roles in decision making and planning of issues that affect their communities.
UMMA Trust’s key operational strategies are:
• To provide support and representation to agencies on behalf of members of the Muslim community so that this community can gain confidence to build bridges between itself and the mainstream agencies and other communities.
• To promote initiatives so that the community can take a role in the decision making and planning of issues such as health, education, welfare, housing and employment which affect the Muslim, refugee and Migrant communities.
• To assist Muslim refugees and migrants with settlement in New Zealand by providing support and information.
• To enhance a sense of tolerance for difference amongst the varying ethnicities and beliefs within the refugee and migrant community.
